Declining Attendance in Black Churches

Image
The Marvin  Winans  Incident   During a "Day of Giving" event at Detroit's Perfecting Church in October 2025,  Bishop Marvin Winans  criticized congregant  Roberta McCoy  for donating $1,235 instead of the $2,000 he had requested . The incident played out in front of the congregation and was captured on a livestream.   Winans had asked members to donate "$1,000 plus $1,000" toward a long-running building project. When McCoy presented her $1,235 donation, Winans publicly interrupted and corrected her, saying, "That's only $1,200... That ain't what I asked you to do". When McCoy said she would give the rest later, Winans reiterated, "That's not what I asked you to do". The incident went viral, with many on social media accusing the pastor of public shaming and spiritual manipulation.   Reasons for declining attendance in Black churches are complex and multifaceted, extending beyond individual incidents. White Fatigue Is Reaching Pandemic Levels

Image
The Myth of "Black Fatigue" and the Reality of Double Standards There is a familiar, sinking sensation that many Black Americans feel when a horrific headline flashes across the screen. Before the suspect’s face is revealed, a silent prayer often goes up: “Please don’t let them be Black.” This isn’t born of a sense of shared guilt, but rather a weary understanding of how the American media and public consciousness operate. When a Black individual commits a crime, it is frequently treated as a moral indictment of the entire race. There are no excuses, no deep dives into "troubled" backgrounds, and very little grace. Contrast this with the narrative surrounding white perpetrators of violence. We are currently seeing a rise in "White Fatigue" rhetoric—a defensive pivot that attempts to paint white people as the "true" victims of modern society. Yet, when we look at the actual headlines, a glaring double standard emerges in how we discuss criminalit...

Black Women Democrat Support Critique

Image
Democratic Party Black Women Support Critique The discourse surrounding the Democratic Party’s relationship with its most loyal constituency—Black women—is often framed in terms of unwavering support. Yet, beneath the surface of campaign trail platitudes lies a recurring and deeply troubling pattern: a profound lack of reciprocity. The treatment of figures like Representative Jasmine Crockett serves as a stark reminder that for Black women, loyalty to the party is too often a one-way street, a dynamic that demands urgent and honest examination. The current political landscape in Texas offers a glaring case study. As Representative Crockett navigates a grueling Senate race in a district deliberately fractured by Republican gerrymandering, the support from her own party has been, at best, anemic. This is not an aberration but a familiar script. One need only recall the treatment of Stacey Abrams in Georgia. Invited by then-presidential candidate Joe Biden to introduce him, she was positi...

White Americans Oppressing Black People

Image
Anti-Black Racism Has Hurt White Americans More Than What They Imagined You know what's wild? White Americans have spent centuries oppressing black people . And in the process, they robbed themselves of trillions of dollars . They literally voted to stay poor just to make sure we stayed poorer. Let that sink in. Let me tell you something that doesn't get talked about enough. Racism isn't just morally bankrupt. It's financially bankrupt, too . And the people who have paid one of the steepest prices, white Americans themselves . I know that sounds counterintuitive. I know some of you are already getting defensive, but stay with me because the numbers don't lie and neither does history. We need to have an honest conversation about how anti-Black racism has been one of the most expensive mistakes white America has ever made . Not just expensive for black folks, though we've obviously borne the brunt of it, but expensive for white Americans who have consistent...

Regime Change Trap

Image
The Regime Change Trap: Why the "Old Playbook" is Failing in Iran We need to have a serious conversation. And by serious, I mean the truest sense of the word: not sensational, not partisan, and definitely not designed to make you feel "good" about one side or the other. To understand the current friction with Iran, we have to look past the headlines and grapple with what is actually happening geostrategyically. If we look at the historical record, it tells a very different story than the one usually presented in 30-second news clips. The Ghost of 1953 The "regime change" strategy is one of the most documented failures in modern American history. But before we can critique the present, we have to be honest about the past. In 1953, the CIA and British intelligence orchestrated the overthrow of Muhammad Mossadegh, Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister. His "crime"? Nationalizing Iranian oil and threatening Western financial interests. The I...

A Critique of the Modern Black Church

Image
The Decay of an Institution: A Critique of the Modern Black Church The recent egregious behavior of certain religious leaders, such as the public shaming of a congregant for her donation, serves as a stark illustration of a deeper, systemic issue: the decay of institutions . This decline, particularly within the Black church, is argued to be the critical reason the powerful ideals of the Civil Rights Movement failed to translate into established, lasting power for the Black community. Ideas Versus Institutions A revolution's true impact is determined not by its initial powerful ideas, but by the institutions that carry them forward. As was the case with the American Revolution, where existing governmental and economic structures (Congress, business leaders, plantation owners) were in place to take over, institutions are the scaffolding of lasting power. The Civil Rights Movement, however, lacked robust, transferable, secular institutions. The one institution that was over...

The Decay of Institutions: The Black Church

Image
The Decay of Institutions: The Black Church and the Crisis of Spiritual Legitimacy A recent viral video has sparked widespread commentary, not just because of one pastor’s egregious behavior, but because it points to a much deeper problem—the decay of institutions, particularly within the Black community. The controversy surrounding Bishop Marvin Winans and his congregation is not an isolated event. It is a symptom of institutional rot, a decay that began long before this particular scandal. To understand how we arrived here, we must look at how institutions either sustain or collapse after moments of revolution and transformation. The Civil Rights Movement was undoubtedly a revolution—a struggle filled with profound moral and intellectual energy. But, as historian Steven Kotkin observed, after a revolution, it is not the ideas that survive; it is the institutions. This was true in both the American and French Revolutions. In the American colonies, political and economic stru...
